Search Marketing unmasked – in April’s NZMarketing

mm-150pxl.jpg It’s on newsstands now, my cover story for NZMarketing Magazine that gives the lowdown on the increasingly mainstream Search Marketing / Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) industry.

It’s an overview of where the industry’s at, particularly in New Zealand, and gives a few clues as to where it’s going in the future!

Great article. I think the Nz market still needs a bit of a shake up.

Most of the firms that offer these services come from a technical background.

For the industry to gain more credibility (in the eyes of Kiwi’s) and take it to the next step I think we need to get some of the bigger firms offering Internet Marketing services.

    This would benefit everyone.

I agree, Ben (are we related?), but I would also say that those agencies that are offering search alongside more traditional offerings tend to not really understand the ins and outs (and there are a lot of ins and outs!) of search. At least, that’s the word on the street.

Search is a discipline in itself. It needs to be recognised as such, not as an add-on to other services.

Not sure, my roots lie in the South Island.

Thats true. They know its there but Ad Agencies in New Zealand reap such high profits its not YET worth diversifying. I think once it is they will just buy some of these smaller operators.

    Bit of a conundrum really.

You offer a valid point. But what is Search Engine Marketing other than another communications channel? within the Marketing Mix firms are always utilising various channels. Really to effectively utilise it, need:
    a) Specialist team that can deal with it.
    b) Liaise to ensure thats its drawn into the marketing mix.

Maybe the local firms just need to create stronger relationships with other Marketing companies? For example BMW will hire 4 differenet marketing companies to handle different facets of its Marketing campaign with someone overseeing the whole process.

If the above position was created suddenly Internet Marketing is going to be the golden egg in the mix.

That’s what is happening a lot now anyway, where a marketing manager will have a few key suppliers, and the marketer themselves will be the glue that holds them all together.

This puts a lot of responsibility on the marketer, and I think for some of them it’s quite exciting. Might be a bit much for others… hard to know.
